I just absolutely can not wait until next month. They'll finally be running cable lines through my area of the "hills n' hollers". That was
the only downside to relocating to my current residence. I love the country though, but imagine being a computer programmer with dialup. It is horrendous! Soon
though, soon. Then maybe I'll be able to check out all these you tube vids you guys keep posting!

I am happy for you. Above message seems to come from a distant past for me. These days, everyone around here is hooked up on 120 Mbit.
I now have this mental image that you live in a black and white world where you back up your T-Ford on your driveway and listen to hearing plays every night on the radio while you are smoking a pipe and the neighbourhood kids are all gathered around your chair because you are the only one with a radio in the street. |

That's the United States for people who don't have a lot of money. This is really two countries, one for the rich and the professionals, and one for
the "other people." It occurs to me that John Edwards said something similar during his presidential race - but then he got busted having an affair
and was drummed out of existence. Anyway, it's July 4th, so God Bless America.
And nowhere else.

John Edwards was the only potentially viable candidate I really cared about.
Kucinich and Gravel were good, of course, but they didn't have a chance in this political climate. Having a Dem in the White House is better than the alternative, though. |

Kucinich was, is, and always will be nice. His entire political career is without blemish, as far as I can tell. Some people would blame him for bankrupting
Cleveland, but I see that as a positive thing. He did it to keep Cleveland's public utility owned by the community, rather than by the banks. To do so, he
literally put his life at risk- at one point, the mafia had a contract on his life. But Kucinich stood firm, refused the blackmail, bankrupted his city, and
kept Municipal Light public. He then withdrew from politics and embarked on a spiritual search, reporting his income in 1982 as just $38 for the entire year.
The city of Cleveland later recognized him for his role in keeping electricity affordable by saving the public utility and awarded him for his actions.
Gravel, on the other hand, went down the toilet in my eyes when he defected to the "Libertarian" party upon realizing that his Democratic bid was going nowhere. Gravel was initially promising but his endorsement of the Libertarians did him in for me. He has since announced his retirement from politics and will not be seen or heard from again on the national stage. He is no Kucinich.
If there is any reason to celebrate the existence of this country today, it is that individuals such as Dennis Kucinich have appeared to represent it.

Wow, I wasn't aware of the Libertarian bit with Gravel. Did he side with them because of his views on drug policy? Anyway, I officially disendorse him now
that I know this. Unacceptable.

Naturyl |

No, I don't think it was drug policy. I really do think that above all, Gravel saw them as lending his candidacy some "legitimacy" where it was
getting none in the Democratic race. As I recall, he placed third in the Libertarian primaries and was taken quite seriously in their circles - whereas he was
not taken seriously as a Democratic candidate. We all have an ego and Gravel's was clearly a factor. He wanted to be surrounded by people who considered
him a "real presidential candidate" and that wasn't happening in the Democratic party, so he jumped ship and got involved with people who would
treat him as if he were significant.
But yeah, when I learned of this, I yanked all support for him and hit his channels/sites with disendorsement messages as well.

I gotta admit, though - Gravel was funny and a good sport:

Yeah, he was. I'm deeply disappointed that he would turn to the Libertarian party for egotistical gratification like that.
|

That's the only thing he could have turned to them for, because Gravel is anything but a social Darwinist. Back in the 70's, he included a guaranteed
minimum income as part of his platform. But apparently, all of that could be thrown out the window for a chance to be taken semi-seriously. Gravel lost my
respect with that move and I now consider him a has-been politician who was looking for ego-gratification and attention for his pet cause, the "National Initiative." I never liked the National Initiative anyway. Not only is it
blatantly unconstitutional, it is also a bad idea. "Direct democracy" is a good way to take a quick trip back to the Stone Age. The Constitution is
designed to protect the rights of minorities against the "tyranny of the majority." Gravel's National initiative would undo all of that and place
this country's government directly into the hands of the mouthbreathing masses. No thanks.
I'm not sure Gravel knows or cares what he is doing anymore. If he did, he would surely see that what he is proposing is potentially incredibly regressive. I think Gravel just wants to be "relevant," at any cost.

Not surprising though, before my drinking graduated itself from a few beers a night to almost a half gallon of vodka or whiskey (which took about eight years to get that bad) I used to not be able to sleep for several days at a time. I'm an insomniac, and in a way I kind of like it. More time to get things done. Glad you are ok from the earthquake. Curiously, where are you located? |

How did you do it for that long? Anytime I start regularly exceeding about a 6-pack per day I start having all kinds of health problems. It's beyond me how
people can drink huge quantities every day.

hmcc,
Are you also an agnostic?
In Panama. [I thought you knew that.] We got another quake last night, and may get one tonight. People are very scared because this never used to happen before. We assumed we were in a no-quake zone. ETA: The thing about agnosticism was a joke. Lately most of my jokes have been taken seriously, so it may be a good idea for me to clarify when joking. Are you also an agnostic? At one time I was die-hard Christian. Then I became agnostic. I don't really consider myself agnostic anymore, as I'm convinced there is no god figure. But that doesn't make me an atheist either. I'm not sure what I am anymore. In Panama. [I thought you knew that.]I knew that. I've been overmultitasking lately to get this program finished, getting confused on who is saying what. ETA: The thing about agnosticism was a joke. A half gallon of vodka or whiskey per day? Eegads man, thats a lot of alcohol! Good thing you stopped.Yea, the doctor said that it was impressive that half my organs are still fully functional. Turns out, I'm still healthy as an ox. Got a little bit of liver damage, but nothing too too bad, and this annoying dysphagia that should clear up over the next year. Out of my earshot though, he made a comment to my wife that my eyes should be floating around in my head by now, lol. One month sober though, and I really do feel a difference. Both in my mind and body. |
